I’m currently responsible for the improvement of the MySQL back end systems at Ticketmaster. My projects have included building a better backup solution using the Netapp Filers, and a management system for MySQL servers running in circular replication. This system allows DBA’s to manage a cluster and move databases from server to server without any downtime.
Other duties included looking after 250+ servers which provide the payment and processing systems. Some of these servers are now virtualised using Xen and VMware-server.
One area of my job entailed unix/linux administration. This involved day to day running of high availability clustered web servers based on Apache and PHP in a LVM cluster. We also ran a fault tolerant MySQL cluster which I was responsible for installing.
Another responsibility was message systems. I managed the virus and SPAM filtering systems for over 75 domains ensuring that the end user is kept safe from various e-mail born threats. I built an open source filter to sit in front of these systems to create a dual layer of protection. This was achieved using Postfix, Amavisd-new, SpamAssassin along with Bitdefender and ClamAV, plus other anti-spam checks.
I was also responsible for the networking and firewalls. The firewalls were Nokia Checkpoint boxes and were based in the UK, Sweden and S.A. which were linked via VPN. The four UK sites where linked by LES circuits and were part of the cisco network setup up which I managed.
My role at In-Sourced involved the security of the network and web/mail servers. This was achieved by using my Linux firewalling skills (IPTABLES). I was also responsible for the maintenance and patch management of the servers. We had five Linux servers, running a mixture of RedHat and Debian. I was responsible for the running of DNS(BIND), DHCP, Exim, Apache and Samba servers. We tightly integrated PHP and MySQL / Postgres support for the web servers. I was responsible for the migration of all Windows 2000 servers to Debian Linux servers and I also oversaw the migration from PHP4 to PHP5. The desktop support role involved general maintenance of Windows 2000/XP. The role also covered general computer trouble shooting and liaising with the users.
My responsibilities were to maintain network services as well as the general running of the computers. I was responsible for security upgrades and security policies in the building. I also ran and maintained the offsite servers, which run the company’s web and mail services. They run a mixture of Windows and Linux systems that are integrated via a Samba server of which I had the task to install and maintain. I was also responsible for the installation and maintenance of our mail and DNS servers.
